Abstract Extravaganza
Lewis "Lewie" Lytal
Steven cornett
Ring in the New Year with us in January as we exhibit an exclusive collection of original abstract paintings on canvas by the late Lewis Lytal. These energetic acrylic paintings illustrate a unique calligraphic style, drawing the viewer into the “stories” they tell.
As an added treat in January, Steven Cornett’s exhibit will be extended this month with more of his latest creations of exquisite hand-blown glass bowls, vases, and lanterns.
Join us for an Artists’ Reception on First Friday, January 7th, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Wine and light appetizers will be served.
Lewie Lytal
Untitled #54
Acrylic on Canvas
Lewis (Lewie) Lytal of Pistol River, Oregon created many metal sculptures and paintings for over 20 years, until his passing in 2001. By trade, Lewie was a stone mason, known for his artistically built fireplaces, stone and tile work throughout Curry County. All his free time was spent making art, creating many whimsical metal sculptures and hundreds of two-dimensional works on paper and canvas.
Lytal had few exhibits in his lifetime, with much of his works selling since his passing. Only a single garden sized metal sculpture reflecting his sense of humor and wry outlook on the world remains, along with several large bold abstracts on canvas. Many of these large, dynamic canvases were found a few years ago in his studio attic and will be displayed in our January exhibit. These final pieces are offered exclusively at Illahe Studios and Gallery.
Steven Cornett
handblown glass lanterns
Steven Cornett has been working with glass since 1989, when he took his first glassblowing class with Kent Ipsen, a man known for his life-sized lead crystal castings.
“From the moment I first saw glass being blown, I was mesmerized by its molten glow. The process drew me in, igniting what has become a twenty year passion for glass. I have always been fascinated by the life that each piece exudes when it is aglow, and have long tried to capture that essence.”
In this new series of lanterns, Steven has “infused the life of the fire into each finished piece. By adding light to traditional vessel shapes, I feel the spirit of the process is reclaimed.”
Steven currently creates custom work in studios in the Rogue Valley near his home in Ashland, Oregon.
