Hand Blown Glass Lanterns
Ring in the New Year with us in January as we continue our exhibit of the brilliant hand-blown glass lanterns by Steven Cornett! Steven’s lamps have a distinct quality of their own, from whimsical retro styles to traditional elegant, and to edgy contemporary forms; their glow will enhance the ambiance of any room.
Steven Cornett has been working with glass since 1989, when he took his first glassblowing class with Kent Ipsen, a man known for his life-sized lead crystal castings.
“From the moment I first saw glass being blown, I was mesmerized by its molten glow. The process drew me in, igniting what has become a twenty-year passion for glass. I have always been fascinated by the life that each piece exudes when it is aglow, and have long tried to capture that essence.”
Steven’s passion for glass led him to study at Virginia Commonwealth University where his skills were recognized and he quickly transitioned from student to teacher. He continued on with a full-ride scholarship in the Masters program at Rochester Institute of Technology where he was once again recognized for his creativity and skill and was enlisted to teach glassblowing, glass-casting, sand-casting, cold-working and glass fusion to undergraduates.
Steven went on to teach glassblowing at the Seattle Glassblowing Studio and in 1997, he was snapped up by “Team Chihuly,” where he worked on numerous projects, as well as free-lance work for nationally know glass sculptor, Martin Blank. In 1999, Steven was promoted to gaffer (lead artist) for Chihuly’s “Portland Press Special Edition” art pieces. After his move to Ashland 2 years later, he opened Gathering Glass Studio where he was owner/artist until 2005. He currently creates custom work in studios in the Rogue Valley near his home in Ashland, Oregon.
